Pest Control in Zachary, LA

Zachary at a glance

Zachary is a city of 19,316 people (2020) in northern East Baton Rouge Parish, about 16 miles north of Baton Rouge, covering about 24 square miles.

What that means for pests

Zachary has grown fast, with new subdivisions cut from pasture and woods. New construction disturbs fire ant colonies and termites alike, and wooded lots bring roof rats; see fire ant and ant control. Subdivisions backing onto woods see more roof rats and armadillo digging than older streets in town.

Open ground

Large yards and pasture edges mean fire ant mounds and mosquitoes after rain. Retention ponds in newer neighborhoods add to the summer mosquito count.

A railroad town

Much of the city was once Darel Zachary's 160-acre farm, which he sold to the Illinois Central Railroad in the 1880s. A village grew around the depot, a post office opened in 1885 and Zachary incorporated on August 2, 1889. A fire in 1903 destroyed much of the town, and the historic village holds the buildings that survived or came just after. Older wood buildings are worth a termite inspection; see termite control. Families moving up from Baton Rouge for the schools often ask for a termite inspection before buying.
